We have been learning about the features of a river. Can you name any of the features and describe them?
Today we visited the Lower Clydach River (LCR) and the Tawe to carry out river investigations. We walked alongside the LCR towards Cwm Clydach Nature Reserve. On the way up we carried out a pollution survey. We will publish our results next week.
Eventually we reached a bridge where we began our investigation, we measured the width of the river, the depth of the river and the speed of the river at various points. We will show you how with our instruction writing next week. Along our walk back we saw many features of a river including waterfalls, rapids, meanders, erosion, deposition, tributaries and confluences. What did you learn today? What was your favourite part of the trip? How did you measure the speed/depth/width? After looking at Martin Luther King's famous 'I have a dream' speech we have been looking at our hopes and dreams for our community. Below are some examples of our speeches. What do you think? Do you have any hopes or dreams for yourself or our community? We have been learning all about the Moon Landing in 1969. We have been looking at evidence to decide whether the landing happened or was a hoax! What do you think? Today saw the launch of something exciting for our school, Premier league Reading Stars. A group of 13 children will have 10 football themed reading lessons. Today was the first lesson. Mr Taylor explained what the lessons and scheme was all about. After this we signed our PLRS contracts like real footballers. After this we took part in the Great Football Quiz. This quiz had six parts. During each part we gained points to try and win the quiz. Part One was all about where we can find sources of football information. We thought of loads of places such as the internet, newspapers, magazines and books. Part Two was all about newspapers, we looked at headlines and had to fill in the gaps. The next part was all about magazines, we had to say our favourite magazines and see if we could name any football magazines. We answered the question why is FourFourTwo called FourFourTwo? Next the round was all about match reports. We read a report from the Swansea vs West Ham match on the BBC Sport website. We then answered questions about the report. The fifth round was all about football fiction we needed to listen to Mr Taylor read a section of a football story and then answer questions about the section. The final part was a penalty shoot out with Mr Taylor in goals. We drew 3-3-3, Mr Taylor was rubbish in goals! Remember that you have to complete match one (write a diary entry in about lesson 1) in your learning log for your homework and that there are lots of online challenges available. Today we looked at the different social groups that existed in the 1960s. Their names were Mods, Rockers, Hippies and teddy Boys. What facts can you remember about them? One of the most famous things to emerge from the 1960s was the Mini car. We spent time comparing the Mini Mk1 from the 60s to a Mini Cooper from 2014. We looked at all of the numerical data and the visual looks. We found differences and similarities before deciding which Mini was our favourite. Which Mini was your favourite? We have looked at the space race. Can you answer the following questions about the space race? What was the space race? What countries were involved in the space race? Can you name any of the main events in the space race? We looked at Martin Luther King's 'I Have a dream speech'. Was it a good speech?
